Legacy archive · Unreal Tournament

Before there were apps, there were maps.

A small excavation from my years as an Unreal mapper: seven DeathMatch maps for Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Tournament 3, released as XIR.Xanton.

About this archive

Seven traces across two generations

The records of the four dated maps come from the original posts in the surviving XiR Clan forum. The UT3 screenshots were attached directly to the forum and are mirrored locally here.

Two UT2004 maps were also recovered from my old server redirect. For the two UT3 betas, only the screenshots have surfaced so far.

Three more UT2004 maps are playable on Xanton’s Instant Rumble. The screenshots of all UT2004 maps are real in-game captures.

Unreal Tournament 3

DM-XIR-GoldenRockIsland

A rocky outdoor arena with caves, crystals and a low sun. The forum post introduced it as a work in progress; Beta 1 later ran on the clan server.

DM-XIR-Cloudscape

The clan’s first UT3 map: a symmetrical platform suspended in a dark sky. A preview build ran on the XiR servers, while a public download was reserved for the final release.

Unreal Tournament 2004

DM-Aridity-Beta08

My first larger terrain experiment. Six development builds survived in the old server redirect; Beta 08 matches the version posted in the forum and has been restored as a playable UT2004 map.

DM-XIR-Cage

A small cage map with one essential technical feature: kangaroos. They moved better offline than on the server at the time. Both the original map and the later “-2” server revision are included in the archive.

The Grid

An arena in the style of early computer graphics: a black floor with a glowing grid, dark metal structures edged in light and a horizon of wireframe mountains. At its centre lies a duel pit of floating ring segments above a void. Shoot a segment out from under an opponent and they drop into the depths while the frag goes to you. Around it: a broken stand on pillars, stepped tiers, a communication tower with a beam of light, and patrol ships circling overhead.

Blockworld

A world built from blocks in two halves: a green overworld with a village, pond, mine and floating island, and behind it a glowing underworld with a lava moat and fortress bridge, linked by a portal. Exploding creatures run at players and blow up, even when shot; whoever hits one is credited with the victims.

Afterlight 2026

A bright atrium of ceramic and metal with two galleries, broad ramps and an offset sight barrier at its centre. Cyan and amber lights help orientation, and points of light rise along the energy columns.
